Analysis of Damage in a Ceramic Matrix CompositeMaterials Department Risø National Laboratory 4000 Roskilde, Denmark
School of Aerospace Engineering Georgia Institute of Technology Atlanta Mechanisms of damage and the associated mechanical response are stud ied for a unidirectionally fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composite subjected to uniaxial tensile loading parallel to fibers. A multi-stage development of damage is identified, and for each stage the governing mechanisms are discussed. For distributed matrix micro cracking a continuum damage model is used as the basis for describing the associated stress-strain behavior. A simplified analysis of frictional sliding at the fiber/matrix inter face is made to elucidate its effect on the stress-strain response.
